PPC Imaginarium Concrete Masterclass

Michelle Liao demonstrates how to cast concrete for jewellery.

To assist our entrants in bringing their conceptual statements to life, the PPC Imaginarium Awards has introduced a video masterclass. The first video in the series featuresPPC Imaginarium 2018 Jewellery Finalist Michelle Liao.

Liao guides us through her jewellery-making process to show how she conceptualised and crafted her entry for the 2018 PPC Imaginarium Awards. Her noteworthy design consists of three rings that can fit together like puzzle pieces to form a grand statement – or which can each be worn separately.

Liao is the founder of MICHL Contemporary Fine Jewellery. In addition to designing and manufacturing, she lectures at the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town, where she graduated with a diploma in Jewellery Design in 2014. She featured in the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives programme in 2015. Her designs are inspired by contemporary African aesthetics combined with her strong Asian cultural heritage.

Liao’s jewellery is a prime example of the talent and creative flair that the PPC Imaginarium Awards seeks to promote in its capacity as South Africa’s foremost design and art competition.

PPC Imaginarium Director, Daniel van der Merwe, comments: “Every year, the PPC Imaginarium Awards is privileged to attract some of the top emerging talent in South Africa across all categories. With this masterclass, our aim is to inspire and educate those looking to enter the competition in the future.”
