While concrete can be impressive at large scale, its aesthetic impact can also be celebrated in smaller pieces. In this post, we showcase jewellery and curios that reveal the delicacy of concrete as a design medium – even at a very small scale.

Nitin Barchha and Disney Davis of Mumbai-based design studio Material Immaterial , created a mini city block as a tribute to some of the world’s leading names in architecture, including Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Tadao Ando and Oscar Niemeyer. The set of nine pieces, titled Spaces, reflects the studio’s philosophy of “exposing the bare beauty of materials”. They were created from a special concrete mix that, in their words, “replicates the smooth concrete finish at that scale.”

In creating the collection, the designers wanted to “celebrate concrete’s incalculable contribution to creating and defining spaces in modern life.” Just 62mm x 62mm x 51mm in size, the buildings in the desktop set include Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water, Niemeyer’s Brasilia and Ando’s Church of Light.

Extending their range of intricate miniatures, the studio followed up with a range of cufflinks that combine the fragility of sterling silver with the materiality of concrete. Titled Elements, the range of cufflinks are intricately designed to play with light and shadow, and to reference the concrete architectural masterpieces that have influenced the world.

The miniature pieces in both the Spaces and Elements ranges perfectly encapsulate the beauty and impact of concrete at all scales. The cufflinks are just 14mm x 14mm x 9mm in size. If you’ve devised a unique way of using concrete in miniature, why not enter your idea into the Jewellery category?
