After searching the country for South Africa’s most creative and innovative emerging artists and designers, and selecting a talented pool of 55 finalists, the PPC Imaginarium Awards is proud to share the works of its finalists with the South African public by hosting its first exhibition and walkabout programme at the UJ Art Gallery. Visitors to the exhibition can expect to see cement-inspired designs from across the awards’ creative disciplines, including sculpture, film, fashion, jewellery and industrial design. A special walkabout programme hosted by Daniel van der Merwe will take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the duration of the exhibition - a highlight that is not to be missed.
The next two walkabouts will take place on Saturday, 3 June 2017 at 10h00 and Wednesday, 7 June 2017 at 13h00.
The opening of the exhibition at the gallery coincided with the winners’ announcement, which saw Mziwoxolo Makalima awarded the prize for Overall Winner for his sculpture titled “Doubt-Queuing”.
The 2017 winners were selected by a formidable panel of industry heavyweights, including Van der Merwe, fashion and design consultant Allana Finley, and well-known curators Stephen Hobbs and Zanele Mashumi.
The UJ Art Gallery is the first stop in a nationwide travelling exhibition that includes a variety of auspicious galleries and events across the country, such as 100% Design South Africa in Cape Town and the KZNSA Gallery in Durban.
