Description of artwork
“Necklace” draws on the artist’s experience of growing up as a black South African youth in the wake of dire political struggle. It explores the layered meanings of the word ‘Necklace’ and was created in remembrance of those who passed away in the tragic act of Necklacing. The artist wants his piece to be seen not as an icon of despair, but rather as a token of appreciation. “Necklace” is made entirely of concrete and hessian and is an expertly crafted scale replica of a tyre, made to resemble those typically used in lynchings.
